Joining hands with Applus+Laboratory Renesas to obtain PSA Level 1 certification with CRA extension for three new MCU product groups

This certification demonstrates Renesas' commitment to cybersecurity

Renesas Electronics (TSE: 6723), a global semiconductor solutions provider, announced today that its latest three microcontroller (MCU) product lines have successfully obtained PSA Level 1 certification and come with compliance extensions for the European Union's Network Resilience Act (CRA). This certification, conducted by Applus+laboratory, marks an important step for Renesas in the field of cybersecurity and compliance with upcoming EU regulations.

The certified RA4L1 MCU product group uses Arm ®  Cortex ®- 32-bit low-power microcontroller (MCU) with M33 (CM33) core, supporting Arm TrustZone ® Technology achieves an ideal balance between low voltage operation, low power consumption, and high performance. Their integrated low-power features, advanced security engines, and communication interfaces make these products ideal choices for industrial automation, home appliances, smart homes, consumer electronics, building/home automation, and medical/healthcare applications.

The certified RA8E1 and RA8E2 MCU product groups are based on Arm ®  Cortex ®- The M85 (CM85) architecture is designed for a wide range of applications including industrial automation, household appliances, smart home systems, and medical equipment. RA8E1 MCU product group supports Arm Helium ™ Technology suitable for visual and speech AI applications; The RA8E2 MCU product group has a built-in graphic LCD controller, which can be used for advanced human-machine interface (HMI) solutions.

PSA certification, as a globally leading security framework, was jointly established by Arm and industry partners in 2019. The framework has launched an extension for its first level certification to meet the compliance requirements of the upcoming EU Cyberresilience Act. This new regulation will become mandatory in December 2027 and will be widely applicable to various digital products.
Daryl Khoo, Vice President of the Embedded Processing Marketing Division at Renesas, said, "We are proud to be at the forefront of IoT security. Renesas' PSA Level 1 certification and CRA compliance expansion fully demonstrate our firm determination and commitment to providing customers with secure, future oriented solutions

David Maidment, Senior Director, Market Strategy at Arm, said, "With the increasing popularity of edge AI devices in all markets and the formal implementation of new government regulations, safety has become the top priority. This is not only the key to ensuring the safe deployment of AI, but also an important defense line to protect the rights and interests of enterprises and consumers. Measures such as PSA certification are the foundation for promoting strong device security. Congratulations to Renesas for obtaining these new certifications, demonstrating its outstanding position in the security field in the AI era

Jose Ruiz, Cybersecurity BU Director at Applus+Laboratories, added, "We are committed to providing cybersecurity assessment solutions to enhance market trust and help suppliers comply with regulatory requirements. Reducing the fragmentation of cybersecurity certification is key to achieving this goal. We acknowledge the efforts made by PSA certification in aligning with other private programs and government requirements

PSA Level 1 certification also offers additional extensions to comply with EU RED and UK PSTI regulations. Both regulations apply to connected devices and IoT products, further enhancing their value to manufacturers in meeting global security standards. In addition, Renesas MCU also supports physical protection of trust roots. The RA8D1, RA8M1, and RA8T1 series products have obtained PSA Level 3 RoT component certification, further demonstrating Renesas' long-term commitment to security.
