Eaton battery configuration switch provides flexibility for electric vehicle charging
2024-10-12
Intelligent power management company Eaton announced today that it has partnered with Munich Electrification to jointly develop and sell Battery Configuration Switches (BCS), an advanced solution for electric vehicle 400V/800V dual string battery packs. This innovative integrated bistable device for parallel/series reconfiguration allows 800 volt vehicles to be effectively charged through 400 volt charging facilities, while also providing many advantages compared to traditional solutions.
Eaton's battery configuration switch can reduce up to 12 components in the battery pack disconnect unit, streamlining the system and simplifying packaging and assembly

Mark Schneider, President of Eaton's Vehicle Electrification Division, said, "We are leveraging our extensive background in developing electric mobility solutions to collaborate with Munich Electrification, which focuses on developing cutting-edge battery management systems, to launch this promising new technology. Currently, there are many 800 volt vehicles on the market, but many charging stations can only provide 400 volt power. BCS provides charging flexibility for consumers who wish to use an extended DC charging network

Eaton's BCS is designed specifically for passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, and all terrain multi-purpose vehicle applications, reducing up to 12 components in the battery disconnect unit, thereby streamlining the system and simplifying packaging and assembly. In addition, BCS can minimize contact resistance and improve overall system efficiency and performance by reducing the number of contact points required for traditional contactors.

BCS has a mechanical interlocking function that can prevent battery pack short circuits caused by collisions, software errors, or contactor failures, thereby ensuring higher safety standards for electric vehicles. When the electronic control unit is powered off, BCS can also maintain a stable state. Its bistable characteristics improve efficiency during normal operation by eliminating the holding current of traditional contactors, and provide recovery from low voltage faults by maintaining safe operating conditions under various potential failure modes.

Uwe Wiedemann, Managing Director of Munich Electrification, said, "We are delighted to collaborate with Eaton to launch this groundbreaking new technology developed by our outstanding R&D team. Munich Electrification's innovative tradition in the electric vehicle battery industry, combined with Eaton's expertise in electrical switches and automotive manufacturing, will help us jointly address the biggest challenges faced by our customers
