NRF9151 is officially mass-produced and launched! Small, low-power cellular interconnect solutions empower large-scale IoT market applications
2024-09-09
Nordic Semiconductor, a leading global provider of low-power wireless IoT connectivity solutions, announced the launch of its small, low-power system in package (SiP) product nRF9151 and its accompanying nRF9151 development kit (DK).
NRF9151 is a fully integrated pre certified SiP with an application MCU, which can be used for a wide range of application development or as a standalone cellular modem. This simplifies the development and deployment of various scalable products in large-scale IoT markets such as industrial automation, asset tracking, smart cities, smart metering, and smart agriculture. In addition, the country of origin of nRF9151 is not subject to US tariff restrictions.
NRF9151 provides an economically efficient global universal solution and is a significant advancement in cellular IoT technology. This comprehensive and compact solution includes hardware, software, cloud services, development tools, and world-class support with programmable application processors.
Main characteristics of nRF9151 SiP
Like the previously launched nRF9161, nRF9151 supports 3GPP Release 14 LTE-M/NB IoT global coverage and DECT NR+. Compared with nRF9160 and nRF9161, nRF9151 has unique features such as significantly reducing the board area, thereby achieving a more compact product without affecting performance.
In addition to supporting a third level power of 23 dBm, nRF9151 also supports a fifth level output power of 20 dBm. Due to its unique low-power design, the peak power consumption of nRF9151 has been reduced by 45%, thereby lowering the cost of battery powered products. The future firmware version of nRF9151 will also add support for non terrestrial networks (NTN).
The nRF9151 DK comes pre installed with free data SIM cards from Onomondo and Wireless Logic, making it an ideal starting point for cellular IoT application development.
This DK comes pre installed with Nordic's serial LTE modem application, which can be connected via AT commands. This also allows nRF9151 to be used as a standalone cellular modem, simplifying integration with existing customer solutions. Developers can start using other firmware samples through the quick start tool in Nordic cross platform development software nRF Connect for Desktop.
Powerful cellular IoT solutions enhance supply chain resilience
The nRF9151 SiP includes a dedicated 64 MHz Arm Cortex-M33 application processor with 1 MB flash memory and 256 KB RAM, a multi-mode LTE-M/NB IoT modem with GNSS, power management, and RF front-end, all designed by Nordic.
Nordic's nRF Connect SDK and nRF Cloud services support application design, and Nordic is also responsible for regulatory certification and operator module pre-approval. Nordic independently owns modules/SIPs and design environments, providing the necessary support for long-lasting IoT applications. Compared with the previously launched nRF91 series products, nRF9151 has improved the adaptability of the supply chain, enabling the creation of applications with a production life of over ten years and robust durability.
NRF9151 is now in production, and I am very excited about it because we know that customers and many other IoT developers require highly integrated, compact, low-power LTE-M/NB IoT and DECT NR+solutions. NRF9151 is a product that meets market demand in terms of functionality and flexible supply chain.
