At present, advanced intelligent vehicles are generally equipped with Advanced Driving Assistance System (ADAS). The application of ADAS is the key to realize the active safety of automobiles and must have high availability. In contrast, the landing of automatic driving technology is more challenging, because the automatic driving function requires the vehicle itself to complete emergency operation in case of failure. This puts forward higher requirements for the automobile power distribution system, and requires the introduction of safety components to ensure that the system can quickly achieve fault isolation within 100 microseconds. Because the fuse can not meet this requirement, it is necessary to consider partial or comprehensive electrification transformation of the automobile power distribution system. In addition, there will be more and more applications on intelligent vehicles that can improve the comfort of drivers and passengers.

The power distribution system supplies power for these applications, allowing electrical energy to flow from batteries or motors to various loads in the vehicle in a highly safe and controllable manner. Today, one of the biggest challenges facing designers is to reduce the cost, length, weight and complexity of the harness. In order to help designers solve this problem, Infineon Technology introduced an intelligent high-voltage side MOSFET grid driver EiceDRIVER with integrated circuit protection function for 12 V/24 V automotive applications ™ 2ED2410-EM, the grid driver is Infineon 40/60 V OptiMOS? An ideal partner for MOSFETs.

The gate driver has two output channels, which is suitable for two different MOSFET structures: a common source stage or a common drain back to back configuration with a pre charging path. The enhanced driver switch functionality allows it to easily increase the number of MOSFETs in order to control greater load currents. Even when the current reaches hundreds of amperes, it can be quickly disconnected in microseconds, while traditional fuses need to wait several milliseconds to open. In addition, during the period from short circuit to disconnection of fault load, the device can operate normally at a voltage as low as 3V.

EiceDRIVER? 2ED2410-EM has three analog measurement interfaces and four integrated comparators to provide protection, which can provide flexible and rich solutions to meet various functional requirements, including adjustable I-t line protection, over-current protection, over-voltage/undervoltage protection, etc. It can measure bi-directional current, monitor drain source voltage, and determine open circuit of output load.

The adjustable line protection function is helpful to select the wire section as small as possible for the corresponding load. In the past, considering the tolerance and aging effect of traditional fuses, the wire diameter must be up to 30% more than the actual demand. The device has an extremely low quiescent current loss of a few tenths of an ampere, which can minimize the automatic discharge of the battery when the vehicle is parked.
