Nordic Semiconductor collaborates with Deutsche Telekom to achieve cellular connectivity for all things
2025-04-07
Nordic Semiconductor, a leading global provider of low-power wireless connectivity solutions, has partnered with Deutsche Telekom, a world leading integrated telecommunications operator, to launch a transformative IoT solution aimed at enhancing the global connectivity of embedded devices. The MECC (Make Everything Cellular Connected) solution, which means "making everything mobile and interconnected," was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) held in Barcelona from March 3rd to 6th. It is developed based on the nRF9151 system level package and provides a fully integrated and scalable solution designed to help developers worldwide simplify IoT applications.

Nordic Semiconductor's nRF9151 cellular module is the core of MECC, which is a low-power cellular IoT solution. This product has industry-leading battery life performance and is a highly integrated globally certified module that significantly simplifies IoT connectivity. NRF9151 will be supplied through Deutsche Telekom and equipped with pre activated integrated nuSIM, ensuring seamless connectivity across Deutsche Telekom's extensive network and its roaming partner networks, thus meeting the critical demand for reliable and easy connectivity in the IoT field.

Industry leaders establish partnerships

Oyvind Birkenes, Executive Vice President of Nordic Semiconductor's Long Range Business Unit, said, "At last year's Mobile World Congress, we proposed our vision of achieving global cellular connectivity. Now that we are partnering with Deutsche Telekom to provide comprehensive solutions for all OEMs and equipment manufacturers, we are thrilled to see our vision become a reality

Dennis Nikles, General Manager of Deutsche Telekom's IoT business, said: "Nordic Semiconductor is fully committed to developing low-power, high-quality, and comprehensive cellular technology solutions, and is the ideal partner for this key initiative. This collaboration will change the connectivity of the Internet of Things, achieving unprecedented convenience and efficiency

Fill in connection gaps with MECC

Research shows that currently only about 25% of smart devices are connected through non cellular networks, posing significant challenges to remote security, device management, user experience, and supply chain visibility. Deutsche Telekom's MECC solution aims to bridge this gap and has the potential to increase device connectivity to 100%. This fully functional software suite includes connectivity, modem, location tracking, application hosting, and more, all integrated into the nRF9151 compact 12x11mm package.

OEM manufacturers and equipment manufacturers will benefit greatly from this simplified approach. By adopting MECC solutions, they are able to simplify the supply chain, reduce the complexity of managing multiple connectivity solutions, and enhance overall security and network management. Deutsche Telekom will serve as an independent contact point and provide nRF9151 with built-in network management services.
