Micron’s New Generation Graphics Memory for Gaming and Artificial Intelligence
2024-06-08
On June 5, 2024, Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ code: MU) announced today that it has produced the industry's highest capacity density next-generation GDDR7 graphics memory. [1] The Micron GDDR7 adopts Micron's 1 β (1-beta) DRAM technology and innovative architecture to create high-performance memory with a speed of up to 32 Gb/s through optimized power consumption design. The system bandwidth of Micron GDDR7 exceeds 1.5 TB/s, which is up to 60% higher than GDDR6. It is equipped with four independent channels to optimize workloads, achieving faster response time, smoother gaming experience, and shorter processing time. Compared with GDDR6, Meiguang GDDR7 has an energy efficiency improvement of over 50%, achieving better heat dissipation and battery life; [4] The new sleep mode can reduce standby power consumption by up to 70%. [5] The Micron GDDR7 also boasts leading reliability, availability, and applicability (RAS), enhancing device reliability and data integrity without compromising performance, making it suitable for a wide range of workloads including artificial intelligence, gaming, and high-performance computing.
Micron GDDR7 has strong performance and can increase the throughput of generative AI workloads such as text to image creation by up to 33%, while reducing response time by up to 20%. Micron predicts that compared to the current GDDR6 and GDDR6X, graphics cards equipped with GDDR7 will increase the frame rate per second (FPS) of ray tracing and rasterization by more than 30% at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K resolutions. The launch of 7 GDDR7 further enhances Micron's industry-leading product portfolio, providing DDR, LPDDR, and GDDR memory options for edge AI inference applications of CPU, NPU, and GPU components. For gaming applications, the Micron GDDR7 brings players an AI enhanced gaming experience with its excellent performance and frame buffer scaling technology, including flexible terrain, player characters, and storylines.
Praveen Vaidyanathan, Vice President and General Manager of the Computing Products Business Group at Micron, said, "Micron has once again led memory innovation, launching the highest bandwidth graphics memory solution today. With advanced processes and interface technology, Micron continues to consolidate its leading position in the field of graphics performance. With top-notch performance, Micron's GDDR7 memory brings a new level of realism and excellent performance to the most demanding application scenarios."
After more than five years of successful large-scale production, Micron GDDR6X has always maintained world-class performance and quality. These similar features, combined with mature technology, design, and testing experience, will help accelerate the popularization of GDDR7 and provide comprehensive support for the expansion of the product. Micron has introduced PAM4 signal transmission technology on GDDR6X, achieving a leading performance improvement of over 20% compared to GDDR6. The success of 8 PAM4 laid the foundation for Micron to continue to maintain its leading position with PAM3 in the GDDR7 product portfolio. Meanwhile, advances in engineering technology, such as successfully measuring the performance of the industry's first 40 Gb/s PAM3, have paved the way for future GDDR7 products to achieve higher performance.
Ecosystem Empowerer of Micron GDDR7 Memory Solution
AMD Senior Vice President and Corporate Academician Joe Macri said, "AMD is committed to creating the most immersive gaming experience for players. Our collaboration with Micron on GDDR7 has driven this common goal. We are excited about the launch of Micron GDDR7 and look forward to using this technology to make game responses faster and experiences more realistic."
Cadence Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Chip Solutions Division, Boyd Phelps, stated, "Cadence has a deep history of collaboration with Micron, jointly developing industry-leading GDDR, HBM, DDR, and LPDDR memory IP subsystem solutions.". We are using GDDR7 samples based on Micron's leading 1 β DRAM technology to test and validate GDDR7 PHY IP with speeds up to 36 Gb/s
