Samsung Announces Mass Production of Its Lowest Power Consumption Automotive UFS 3.1 Memory Solution
2023-08-03
The new UFS 3.1 solution has been optimized for the IVI system, reducing power consumption by 33%, further empowering future in vehicle applications
Samsung will create a complete UFS 3.1 product lineup to meet customers' various needs for future in car memory solutions
To meet the different needs of customers, Samsung's UFS 3.1 (Universal Flash Memory) will launch three capacities: 128, 256, and 512 Gigabytes (GB). In future automotive applications (electric vehicles or autonomous vehicle), the enhanced product portfolio can more effectively manage battery life. Among them, the 256GB capacity product reduces power consumption by about 33% compared to the previous generation product, and also provides a sequential write speed of 700 megabytes per second (MB/s) and a sequential read speed of 2000MB/s.
Hyunduk Cho, Vice President of Samsung Memory Product Planning Team, stated:
Samsung's new UFS 3.1 solution timely meets the needs of different customers for optimizing IVI systems, while also meeting the trend of next-generation storage that requires higher 'Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG)' standards. With the launch of the UFS 3.1 solution for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), our goal is to expand our influence in the automotive semiconductor market.
The new automotive UFS 3.1 solution meets the Automotive Electronics Council (AEC-Q100) Level 2 standard (automotive semiconductor quality standard), and can maintain stable performance in a wide range of temperatures from minus 40 ° C to 105 ° C.
Samsung is expected to supply UFS 3.1 products to global automakers and component manufacturers by the end of this year.
As Samsung Electronics continues to strengthen its automotive memory solution portfolio, Samsung obtained ASPICE Level 2 certification from its client company on April 23, 2023, with its UFS 3.1 product applied to ADAS. This month, Samsung once again obtained ASPICE Level 2 certification from the renowned automotive certification agency C&BIS with this product, further proving the high stability required for entering the automotive semiconductor market.
*ASPICE (Automotive Software Process Improvement and Capacity Determination): the software development standard developed/released by the German Automobile Association (VDA) to evaluate the reliability and capability of Software development process of vehicle parts manufacturers, which is divided into 0~5 levels, and the vehicle semiconductor requires more than 2 levels.
Samsung's car memory business has maintained rapid growth since its launch in 2015. In 2017, Samsung launched UFS for automotive applications for the first time in the industry, followed by various automotive solutions such as Auto SSD, Auto LPDDR5X, and Auto GDDR6. With the increasing demand for data storage and computing in the automotive industry, Samsung is committed to providing continuously optimized storage solutions for automotive customers and continuously strengthening research and development and quality improvement work to consolidate its market position.
