Melexis ToF Sensor Helps Realize Functional safety Applications
2023-06-28
On June 21, 2023, Tessenderlo, Belgium - Melexis, a global microelectronics engineering company, announced today that Melexis expanded its product range and further consolidated its position in the field of time of flight (ToF) technology. The latest MLX75027RTI helps automotive and industrial customers meet Functional safety requirements.

MLX75027RTI is a VGA resolution ToF sensor chip with a spatial resolution of 307k pixels, compliant with ASIL standards, suitable for safety critical systems that require ASIL or SIL certification. The main applications of this sensor chip include dynamic airbag suppression (ensuring that airbags do not deploy unnecessarily), driver attention monitoring, and external close range LiDAR. This product is also used for industrial cameras to provide safety perimeter, support robot movement control, and achieve more advanced machine vision technology.

The core of MLX75027RTI is Back Lighting (BSI) imaging technology, which combines Melexis' expertise in automotive applications with Sony's proprietary DepthSense ® ToF pixel structure. The MLX75027RTI can provide 135 deep frames per second.

In terms of packaging, the size of the sensor chip has been reduced by 50% compared to the existing version of the device, supporting the development of more compact imaging systems. The main beam angle of the integrated MLA (micro lens array) has been optimized to simplify the entire optical system. The all-new MLX75027 is available in both automotive and industrial versions. The MLX75027RTI is designed specifically for automotive applications, with a working temperature range of -40 ℃ to+105 ℃, while the MLX75027STI is suitable for industrial applications, with a working temperature range of -20 ℃ to+85 ℃. The MLX75027 series also has another important feature, which is validated daylight robustness, meaning that signal quality is not affected by external environments.

To assist engineers in designing and implementing ASIL/SIL systems, Melexis provides specialized security integration guidelines.

"The upcoming NCAP regulations will promote the application of in car monitoring in the field of safety, which will also become increasingly important in industrial and mass market applications," said Gualtiero Bagnuoli, marketing manager of Melexis optical sensor chips. "Our time of flight sensor chip system has been widely used. Now, with the introduction of MLX75027RTI, we will provide support for system level Functional safety integration."
