Pickering Interfaces' modular LXI chassis enables a more compact and cost-effective testing platform.
In November 2025, Clarkston on the Sea, UK - Pickering Interfaces, a leading supplier of modular signal switches and simulation solutions for electronic testing and validation, announced the launch of a new compact 12 slot LXI/USB modular chassis (model 60-107-001). This new chassis can accommodate PXI and PXIe modules and provides the highest slot density currently available. The device adopts a standard 2U rack specification, equipped with 12 hybrid slots, and can be remotely controlled through USB or LXI (Ethernet) interfaces, without relying on dedicated PXI controllers or embedded PCs. With its USB compatibility and LXI compliance, the chassis can be directly controlled using standard interfaces commonly found on ordinary PCs, providing an efficient and cost-effective solution for various modular testing and measurement applications.
Lee Huckle, Product Manager of Pickering Interfaces Chassis, said, "This chassis adopts a fully hybrid PXI/PXIe backplane design, supports control through Gigabit Ethernet or USB 3.0 interfaces, occupies only 2U rack space, and is particularly suitable for space constrained application environments. As the PXIe hybrid chassis with the highest slot density and lowest single slot cost in the current market, its design effectively meets the growing demand for more compact, scalable, and cost-effective modular testing platforms in the testing and measurement field. ”
This chassis provides engineers with the flexibility to build high-density testing systems while avoiding the additional cost and complexity associated with traditional PXI controllers. Its compact exterior design is not only suitable for workbench environments, but also maximizes the utilization efficiency of valuable rack space. Thanks to the horizontally arranged module layout and built-in embedded controller, this chassis can support up to 12 single slot 3U Pickering PXI or PXIe switch, simulation, and instrument modules within a rack height of only 2U, without occupying dedicated system slots. In addition, the chassis is compatible with modules with a maximum width of four slots and can accommodate large functional modules such as Pickering BRIC4 ultra-high density switch matrix.
The horizontal cooling system eliminates the requirement for traditional rack mounted chassis to reserve adjacent 1U empty rack space to ensure airflow, allowing the second chassis to be directly installed above it, thus achieving the integration capability of up to 24 modules in only 4U of vertical space. Compared to Pickering's previous market leading position in PXI/PXIe module density, the 4U box can be directly installed above it, achieving the integration capability of up to 24 modules in a vertical space of only 4U. Compared to the previous market leading 4U 20 slot PXIe hybrid chassis (42-927 series) with PXI/PXIe module density, the module capacity of the new model has increased by 20%.
This new type of chassis is designed to meet the growing demands in the fields of functionality and production testing, especially in application scenarios where low-cost testing systems need to be expanded, "Lee Huckle added. This solution is particularly advantageous for existing PXI systems, as they often face the problem of limited chassis slot resources and often require the purchase of expensive PXI chassis and controllers. In contrast, our new LXI/USB chassis enables engineers to expand existing PXI systems in a more cost-effective manner, providing a flexible and modular platform that efficiently integrates a large number of switches, analog signals, and instrument resources in the smallest rack space. ”
The 60-107 series is Pickering's first modular LXI/USB chassis with a field replaceable slot design. Its power unit and embedded controller are modularly integrated based on this design, making it easy to maintain without disassembling the chassis from the rack, significantly simplifying daily operations and future performance upgrades.
For application scenarios that require frequent switching and measurement operations, this chassis is equipped with built-in scanning list sorting and triggering functions (model 60-107-002), which can significantly shorten the testing cycle and system latency.
